The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
